Cultural Garden – A Collaborative Mural

Year 10 Student Mural | Australian International Academy, Senior Campus – Coburg North
Facilitated through workshops and a four-day painting intensive

Created over two workshop sessions and four full days of painting, Cultural Garden is a collaborative legacy mural developed with 18 Year 10 art students from the Australian International Academy in Coburg North. Guided by the theme of identity, cultural belonging, and community, students were encouraged to explore the duality of their personal and cultural identities.

Through group discussions and concept development, the idea evolved into a symbolic garden—each student choosing a floral emblem to represent their cultural heritage. Interwoven with these are native Australian flowers and pollinators, which serve as guardians of the garden, symbolising harmony, coexistence, and mutual care.

The featured flora includes:

  • Golden Wattle (Australia)

  • Tulip (Turkey)

  • Cyclamen (Lebanon)

  • Hibiscus (Malaysia)

  • Moon Orchid (Indonesia)

  • Blue Lotus (Egypt)

  • King Protea (Somalia)

  • Water Lily (Iran)

  • Desert Rose (Morocco)

  • Poppy (Palestine)

This mural not only celebrates the students’ diverse backgrounds but also stands as a vibrant, lasting testament to cultural pride, unity, and creative expression within the school community.
