1st Mornington Scout Hall Mural
Commissioned by Mornington Peninsula Shire & 1st Mornington Scouts | 2024
This large-scale mural, located on the exterior of the 1st Mornington Scout Group’s hall in Mitchell Street, Mornington, was commissioned through a $10,000 placemaking grant awarded by Mornington Peninsula Shire. Additional in-kind support was generously provided by local businesses in the form of materials, plant equipment, and technical assistance, reflecting the strong community spirit behind this project.
This work holds special significance as it marked my first official collaboration and remains my largest mural to date. The project was a joint effort between myself and 15-year-old Eligh Rennalls, a former Scout and aspiring artist. The grant application was submitted by a Scout parent with the goal of creating an opportunity for Eligh to gain practical experience in large-scale public art. It was a privilege to mentor him through this process, from concept development through to final execution.
The mural’s design was shaped by creative input from the broader Scout troop and intended to combat repeated graffiti vandalism while uplifting the space and restoring pride in the Scout community following a period of declining engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Together, we created an artwork that reflects the values central to the Scouting movement—resilience, leadership, adventure, and community. It has brought new life to the building and stands as a visual representation of the troop’s identity and spirit. The result is not only a vibrant mural but a shared achievement that strengthens intergenerational ties and showcases what can be accomplished when local government, artists, youth, and community come together.
