A Day On The Bay
Successful EOI Bentons Square Community Centre, Mornington via Mornington Peninsula Shire Arts & Culture
“A Day On The Bay” was created as part of a public art commission for Bentons Square Community Centre, following an Expression of Interest open to artists from the Mornington Peninsula. I was honoured to be selected to bring this vibrant mural to life in response to a brief calling for a landscape or seascape that showcased local flora, fauna, and reflected aspects of community life.
Rather than choosing between land or sea, I chose to merge the two—crafting a surreal, playful scene set on the waters of Port Phillip Bay. Fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians interact in a whimsical, character-driven composition, layered with absurdity and detail. Local landmarks like Chinaman’s Hut, colourful beach boxes, and navigation buoys provide a strong sense of place and anchor the narrative in the region’s natural beauty.
It was a joy to develop, and I’m grateful for the support of Mornington Peninsula Arts & Culture, the selection panel, and the dedicated team at Bentons Square Community Centre, especially manager Kelly.
