“There Are Some Strange Characters On The Bus” – Rosebud Library Bus Stop Mural

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council | Anti-Graffiti Mural Project (2021)

Created as part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s anti-graffiti mural initiative, “There Are Some Strange Characters On The Bus” was one of five mural sites selected through an open call for Expressions of Interest. I was honoured to be the successfully appointed artist for the Rosebud Library Bus Stop location, where the brief called for a bold, graphic artwork that reflected both local flora and fauna and a sense of community.

My approach was to make the bus stop itself a central feature of the mural’s composition, imagining it as a stage for a playful and slightly cheeky slice of local life. Drawing on my street art background, I illustrated anthropomorphic versions of native animals—each with their own personality and quirks—waiting for the bus. Among them, a sly fox cracks jokes with a larrikin kookaburra, much to the dismay of a concerned wallaby mum nearby. These characters were inspired by the kinds of interactions you might overhear on public transport, layered with a fun, local twist.

Painting on corrugated iron presented a unique challenge, but one that added depth and movement to the final piece. The result is a lively, humorous, and community-centred artwork that brings character and storytelling to an everyday public space.
