“Deep Blue Devils” – Mornington Main Street Mural
Commissioned by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council | Anti-Graffiti Mural Project (2021)

“Deep Blue Devils” was created as part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s Anti-Graffiti Mural Project, an initiative launched in 2021 to transform targeted sites through vibrant, community-focused public art. One of five locations open for Expressions of Interest, this site called for an anamorphic mural—an artwork that plays with perspective to create a visual illusion. I was fortunate to be the selected artist for this unique three-walled nook in Mornington’s Main Street.

The brief encouraged a creative use of the alcove space, and upon seeing the palm tree trunk and the wooden meter box nearby, I immediately envisioned a sunken treasure chest beside a pier pylon. Drawing from my childhood memories of jumping off Rye Pier, I chose to set the scene underwater and introduce the striking Southern Blue Devil Fish as guardians of the hidden treasure. In the diving world, these fish are considered the "holy grail" of underwater photography—vibrant, elusive, and native to Victoria’s coastal waters.

The mural wraps around the nook, creating a dynamic 3D illusion of being submerged beneath the pier. The existing structure became part of the artwork, making it both immersive and site-specific.

Executed in a bold, street art-influenced style, “Deep Blue Devils” invites passers-by into a playful, oceanic world. It celebrates local marine life while transforming an overlooked space into a memorable public art experience for the Mornington community and its visitors. This piece is a testament to the power of street art to surprise, engage, and connect people to place.
